At the World Expression Forum (WEXFO), Imaan Mazari-Hazir was honored with the WEXFO Young Inspiration Award, a new prize awarded to a young voice and activist who has made an extraordinary contribution to youth freedom of expression.
This year’s conference marked the first time the award was presented. The 2021 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Maria Ressa, announced the winner during the event.
Imaan Mazari-Hazir (31) is a prominent human rights lawyer from Pakistan who fights for freedom of expression, the rule of law, and justice for marginalized groups. She has taken on high-risk cases, stood firm in the face of threats and persecution, and become a role model for young lawyers and human rights defenders both in her home country and internationally.
“It’s a deep honor for me to receive this award. And most significantly the recognition of the work that I do in Pakistan, amplifies these causes on the international stage. It means a lot to me – and the people that I represent in the courts every day – for this work to be recognized and for our causes to be understood and appreciated on the international stage,” commented Mazari-Hazir.
The jury stated that the award is given to Mazari-Hazir “for her extraordinary courage, integrity, and impact in the struggle for the rule of law and justice. Her work has inspired the local community and earned international recognition—making us all proud and inspired.”
“WEXFO is known for strong and passionate young voices from around the world. With this award, we want to further strengthen the personal initiative and responsibility that young people take in defending freedom of expression. Imaan’s work is a great source of inspiration to us all. She is a truly deserving recipient, and we hope this award gives her continued motivation to carry on her work and her fight for the right to speak freely,” commented WEXFO Director Kristenn Einarsson.
The winner received a diploma issued by WEXFO, glass art by local artist Kari Mølstad, and a grant to return to Norway and participate in the World Expression Forum in 2026.
