Özgür Gür has dedicated himself to defending lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI+) rights. At the university in Ankara, he and the LGBTI+ Solidarity Group organized campus Pride marches successfully for years. When the university banned the march in 2019, he was arrested.
Gür is Co-founder and Director of ÜniKuir, an organization that fights for equal rights regardless of one’s sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics. It provides guidance, organizes gatherings for the LGBTIQ+ community and connects LGBTIQ+ student organizations across Turkey.
In 2021, he and colleagues at LGBTI+ were awarded the Student Peace Prize, and in 2022 Özgür Gür and ÜniKuir received the Freedom from Fear Award.
