Art Under Pressure: Storytelling in the Shadow of Censorship

June 1, 2026

WORKSHOP: How do artists and cultural institutions respond to pressure, censorship, and controversy – without compromising their voice? In this workshop, developed in cooperation with Safemuse and moderated by Celina Jerman Bright-Taylor, participants are introduced to two powerful cases. Ketil Magnussen (HUMAN International Documentary Festival / Oslo Dokumentarkino) reflects on the controversy surrounding the screening of “Russians at War”, while Egyptian musician and activist Ramy Essam shares his experience of exile after becoming a leading voice during the 2011 Egyptian revolution. Building on these perspectives, participants will engage in focused roundtable discussions on how pressure manifests in their own work – and what tools, alliances, and forms of preparedness can help resist silence and erasure. The session concludes with a shared reflection on key insights and practical takeaways.
