In a time when polarization threatens our sense of community, WEXFO’s 2026 theme highlights how disagreement and dialogue strengthen freedom of expression and contribute to democratic resilience.
“Democracies thrive on productive disagreement. When diverse perspectives meet, societies grow stronger. Democracy weakens when disagreement disappears,” says Arizza Nocum (pictured), Chair of the WEXFO Program Committee.
The 2026 conference program will include sessions on the value of dissent and friction, threats to freedom of expression and approaches to safeguarding democratic principles through open discussion. Participants will explore how protecting the freedom to disagree can go hand in hand with fostering dialogue that leads to practical solutions.
Nocum emphasizes the boldness of the conference theme:
“The Freedom to Disagree will open up discussions and stir discomfort. But that’s exactly what our democracies need today. Our program will not only highlight the challenges, but also present clear solutions to strengthen freedom of expression and protect democratic values.”
The event will feature global perspectives, expert panels and solution-oriented sessions.
The WEXFO 2026 conference will take place in Lillehammer 1-3 June, 2026.
