Kristenn Einarsson, the current Managing Director of the World Expression Forum (WEXFO), has announced his decision to step down after leading the organization since it was founded in 2021.
After four years as the head of WEXFO, Kristenn Einarsson (75) has informed the board that he will step down at the end of the year. The search is now underway for a new Managing Director to guide WEXFO forward at a time when freedom of expression and democracy face increasing global challenges.
“WEXFO is seeking a leader with a strong ability to build on the solid foundation that has been laid, and who is passionate about promoting freedom of expression and democracy globally. The new director must have a strong strategic understanding and the ability to foster cross-border collaboration to strengthen WEXFO’s role as an international meeting place,” says Mads Nygaard, Chair of the WEXFO Board.
WEXFO has established itself as a key international arena and advocate for freedom of expression. The recently concluded conference in Lillehammer, held June 1–4, brought together 300 participants from around the world and nearly 1,500 students. It marked Einarsson’s final time leading the event.
“Kristenn has been a visionary force behind the establishment and development of WEXFO. His efforts have been invaluable in bringing us to where we are today,” says Nygaard.
Einarsson co-founded WEXFO in 2021, driven by a strong passion for uniting stakeholders, industries, and activists across borders to promote and defend freedom of expression. In just a few years, the organization has become a central platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and inspiration.
“It has been highly rewarding to lead this work alongside so many talented and dedicated individuals. I am proud of what we have achieved together. In the new year, I look forward to contributing to a new European initiative under the WEXFO umbrella: Democracies Depend on Reading,” says Kristenn Einarsson.
Each year, WEXFO brings together global advocates for freedom of expression in Lillehammer for its flagship conference, including week-long seminars for young activists and a youth-focused Freedom of Expression Festival. The organization also runs international reading initiatives, youth programs, and advocacy efforts to promote freedom of expression and democracy.
